Natural Language and Computer Interface Design
نویسنده
چکیده
Considering the problems we have in communicating with other h~rmans using natural language, it is not clear that we want to recreate these problems in dealing with the computer. While there is some evidence that natural language is useful in communications among humans, there is also considerable evidence that it is neither perfect nor ideal. Natural language is wordy (redundant) and imprecise. Most b,*m,m groups who have a need to communicate quickly and accurately tend to develop a rather well specified subset of natural language that is highly coded and precise in nature. Pilots and police are good examples of this. Even working groups within a field or discipline tend over time to develop a jargon that minimizes the effort of communication and clarifies shared precise meanings.

Comparison of Different Linear Filter Design Methods for Handling Ocular Artifacts in Brain Computer Interface System
Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) record brain signals, analyze and translate them into control commands which are relayed to output devices that carry out desired actions. These systems do not use normal neuromuscular output pathways. Actually, the principal goal of BCI systems is to provide better life style for physically-challenged people which are suffered from cerebral palsy, amyotrophic l...
متن کاملUsing Natural Language Interfaces
A goal of human factors research with computer systems is to develop human-computer communication modes that are both error tolerant and easily learned. Since people already have extensive communication skills through their own native or natural language (e.g. English, French, Japanese, etc.) many believe that natural language interfaces (NLIs) can provide the most useful and efficient way for ...
متن کاملConstraint Soup - Interpreting Natural Language Architectural Constraints
To facilitate mass customization in the building industry, an automated method is needed to check the validity of user-created designs. This check requires that numerous complex building codes and regulations, as well as architects’ demands are formalized and captured by non-programming domain experts. This can be done via a natural language interface, as it reduces the required amount of train...
متن کاملAn Intelligent Computer Interface Utilizing Parallel Picocontrollers (TECHNICAL NOTE)
The design of an interface unit is described, in which RS232 serial data is converted to latched parallel data on 22 independent lines. The data direction of each line is programmable through the serial port. Two picocontrollers are employed in a parallel processing mode to give the required number of I/O pins, and data on the shared serial line is coded to separate data streams to the individu...
متن کاملLangutils: A Natural Language Toolkit for Common Lisp
In recent years, Natural Language Processing (NLP) has emerged as an important capability in many applications and areas of research. Natural language can be both the domain of application and an important component in the human-computer interface. This paper describes the design and implementation of "langutils,” a highperformance natural language toolkit for Common Lisp. We introduce the tech...
متن کاملA Framework for a Sign Language Interfacing System
Sign languages have been proven to be natural languages, as capable of expressing human thoughts and emotions as traditional (spoken) languages are. The distinct visual and spatial nature of sign languages makes it difficult to develop an interfacing system as a communication medium platform for sign language users. This dissertation targets this problem by presenting some explorations in the a...
